The Return of Alien!

by Irma Arkus

After all my constant whining (it seems that execs actually download and listen to HiSciFi, or so I’d like to believe) it’s official! Aliens are coming back in full force!!!!

Today, announced is the return of Alien franchise, Sigourney Weaver in tow to reprise her unforgettable and unmatched role as Ripley. It may be interesting to note that at first, the role was cast for a male actor, only to hand it to Weaver. It still resonates as one of the major female-centered action films, against one of the most frightening creations ever invented – the highly adaptable, acid, double mouthed predator of all times – Aliens.

That is not even the best part though. Scott Ridley is also joining the production as director and producer.

This will be fantastic!!!!

I guess if Terminator is getting a second life, no reason to keep an awesome story like Aliens from a revival. I think I missed Sigourney Weaver and Ripley, as much as you did. She kicked ass in an entirely new way, and there have been a few tries, but no blood and guts when if comes to getting female kickass to screen.

It’s very interesting to learn that one of the iconic female roles in film was original meant to have a male play the part.

Perhaps a wider adoption of the practice would lead to better films in general.

On the other hand, maybe the role is popular because of the relative rarity of “tough guy” women in sci-fi leading roles.

    We’ll never know.

I think the reason Ripley kicks ass is because she was written as a male character – Irma complains about this all the time, and I’d have to agree – they just suck at writing the female characters because they think they’re the “other,” as in something different. Instead, they should just write characters that kick ass. Period. Then we’d have both male and female characters who we enjoy on screen.

Joss Whedon doesn’t seem to have this problem btw.

Yeeey! I thought they screwed us over with the AVP franchise for good, but it this actually happens, I will be one lucky, happy girl again.

I need Ripley, and aliens that thing of humans as nothing else than “ugly bags of mostly water” because they are starting to look a bit like sissies with all the AvP action happening.
