SciFi Gone SyFy?

by Irma Arkus

The SciFi network is changing its name to SyFy. The reason?

Apparently, the genial marketing excercise will broaden the appeal of a network specialising in supernatural and science fiction materials to encompass housewives who have lost their remotes, children who do not know the meaning of words “science” and/or “fiction,” and people who are ashamed of watching science fiction in general.

The arrogance of such a rebranding exercise usually results in disenfranchisement of the already existing fans.

And what is SyFy anyways? Any ideas?

their productions are unbearably low quality. I mean, every friggin movie they produce is just terrible. If it isn’t fo r the fact that they have money to sprinkle around other productions, they would have very little involvement with seomthing as epic as BSG. What the hell? What are they going to do next? Pretend that science fiction is a shameful act??? This tells me what North Americans have told me before – no place for those who are actually intrigued by science, or sociology, or anything that demands intellectual discourse. SyFy can blow me.

And I wonder how much money it took the marketing department to come up with the “rebranding exercise.” I bet this cost at least half a mil to implement and maybe a few thousands more to organize. Don’t they have better things to do? Like, sell advertising? Or make content?
