American Kamen Rider

OH BOY MORE TRAILERS!!! I apologize, but I can’t help it. Really…. Anyways, as some of you might know, the 12th Kamen Rider series, Kamen Rider Riyuki, is set to have an American adaption done by Steve Wang, the guy behind those awesome Guyver movies. It is going to be called Kamen Rider Dragon, and is supposed to be airing sometime in the next month or two on Cartoon Network in the US. of course this has been met with some terpidation and cries of NOOOOO and WHYYYYYYY by many fans of the genre known as tokusatsu, of which Power Rangers is probably the best known example of here in North Americaland. However, with the release of the trailer, which can be seen HERE , reaction to the original announcement is turning into a HOLY CRAP YES! Instead of going with the traditional inane overly moralist kiddy fair that Power Rangers is, this is looking like a far more darker series with cool bikes, cool fights, cool cgi, cool ladies, and cool evil generals in super cool government conspiracies. Sure, there is a touch of cliche to it, and yes, they are totally going to be shilling out the toys and gadgets at your local mega toystore, but damn does this look like a lot of fun and I am pretty sure that once you see the trailer you will agree.

Is “tokusatsu” Japanese

Is “tokusatsu” Japanese for “like a meth rush”? Power Rangers is awesoome - I still even watch the new seasons. It kicks infinite ass and it’s got ninjas and dinosaurs and ninjas who power up robots with electric guitars and the bad guys alwasy explode at the end there’s always lots of shit happening and things exploding and ninja fights and monster bad guys and it’s so like totally sweet. They make a new costumed monster for every episode and it alwasy explodes.
It’s just pure entertainment and it requires no brain power to appreciate. It’s perfect for when you get home at five in the morning and you’ve just eaten a whole box of Foot Loops and you’re on a sugar and sleep deprivation buzz. That being said, Kamen Rider Dragon is bound to deliver on that brainstem activity stimulus level, but it’s also probably going to have more to offer on a narrative level than, “See, Tommy, doing you homework is good. High five!”

Space Power Rangers Rule!

Bionic Groin, you are right. Even though the old beginnings of Power Rangers were sucky, the newer seasons were actually enviably well produced, with some pretty schmancy special effects and some fab rubber monsters. The season where they have their space base was awesome! And I remember watching and thinking that it probably rivaled some fairly well received space shows. Yes, the villains do explode. And that is cool.

Kamen Rider Dragon…this thing can go either way. Thank heavens for the ability of brain to process just about anything into entertainment, when early enough in the morning. I can watch just about anything and find it good fun. This explains for many hours of Tia Carrere as Relic Hunter being absorbed by my barely opened eyes and my barely awakened brain.
