Best and Worst of SciFi Movies
by Irma Arkus
You are looking at a newly *unsubscribed* New Scientist reader. Why? The publication simply did not have enough “science” for my inner scientist. And then they do this…
New Scientist staff compiled the list of favorites and most hated science fiction films. According to their nerds, Dune and Matrix are both hated and loved by all, making them contentious as expected.
That, and Blade Runner always comes up on top beating all opponents for best film. So, in other words, no surprises there.
But this begs the question - what are some of your favorite science fiction films? Best of? Worst of? Any small films you just loved?
Give me your lists people!!!

Elections are making me cranky
Elections are making me cranky, a lot. Palin is so creepy and I am seriously considering packing up and leaving if republicans win again!
New Scientist geeks are demented and not that geeky. Blade Runner is everyone’s top choice, so they haven’t really brought us anything there.
My faves are:
Alien/s
Children of Men
2001
Star Wars
Back to the Future
Matrix
Solyaris
Serenity
Metropolis
Terminator 1 & 2
now I’ll go and compile my “worst of” list

Cone of Silence
Nice list, superjade. I have only seen the Clooney version of Solaris. I should check the real one out some time.
One of my absolute favourites is Colossus: The Forbin Project. The plot is excellent.
I also really loved Starman.

Battlefield Earth anyone?
I would like to take this opportunity to name Battlefield Earth as the WORST MOVIE ever…prove me wrong.

Michael Bay Anyone?
Battlefield Earth is definitely a win win. But let’s not forget Waterworld, Mission to Mars was infuriatingly bad…I think of all these films we deem bad, it is the outrageous amount of money and *fame* attached to productions that make them extremely disappointing.
I mean, Roger Corman made some real beauties, and so did Ed Wood, but we still love the dudes. On the other hand, John Travolta, Brian De Palma, et al had all these funds, and actors, and millions of dollars strewn across and they were WASTED. That’s what takes the cake. Which is why I nominate Travolta/Palma/Bay for worst filmmakers of all times - in fact we should have some sort of an award for this kind of thing. TRAPABAY Awards?

MANOS Anyone?
Badness of films can also be used for good - I am off to check out my collection of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 gems. I will polish them to perfection!!!

MST3K
I know no better source of badness than MST3K - amazing job at picking the carcasses of space turkeys and making them relevant, for the first time ever!
I do have to say though, Blade Runner is the best film ever, and will be for a long long time. Now a better question is - which version of the film is peeps favorite! I say, the one without the cheesy voiceover, because quite frankly, it gives me the creeps, and Deckard turns into some uncomfortable rapist dude that I find so difficult to empathize with. Anyone with me?!!

RE: MSTK3
Ditto on Blade Runner - and this just makes me crave watching MSTK3. Great idea!
I still can’t decide between Waterworld, Battlefield Earth or Mission to Mars. I think though that Waterworld, despite its horrible middle and end, still has redeeming qualities, whereas the other two just fail at being “made by humans.” instead, they belong on some weird “made by nazi aliens” shelf. pheew.
