Chimeras: Stamped and Approved
by Irma Arkus
The long awaited creation of genetic Chimeras has been approved, as reported by the BBC. The use of human and animal embryonic genetic hybrids, known in popular literature as chimeras, should accelerate the genetic research. Approved by Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (who knew this body exists, or that they have authority) the use of chimeras should allow for growth of tissues without harvesting human eggs or embryos, circumventing many ethical issues surrounding stem-cell research.
For those of you who think that this is going to lead to half-man-bear-pig , think again.

I’m not sure what
I’m not sure what definition they’re using exactly for the term “chimera”, but recombinant organisms, hybridomas, and “humanized” animals have been in use in the biological sciences for around half a century. I know the MBB department at SFU has been using humanized mice for years.

Yes, but no...
humanized mouse has been around for over a year now, and the term applies to usage of genetic manipulation to emulate human immune systems. the transgenic mouse is a regular mouse, except born without an immune system (as in, a perfect lab rat, because it would not survive outside it), then you add stem cells of human origin, or bits of cells like liver cells etc…and human illnesses / whatever you need test. that is NOT the same as having Chimeras, animals born with particular distinct human genetic material - i know that cross-breeding genes has been done for centuries, but to create a recombinant dna of human and animal origin is a new thing, and it is something to note as worthy of attention. you shoudn’t just throw these comments around - try googling them first. and for goodness sake ppl - read Science!
