Moonlight: Update on Cancellation

by Irma Arkus

CBS’s Moonlight, a vampire detective/romance drama has been cancelled, causing irate fans to unite in their effort to bring the show “back from the dead,” so to speak.

Cancellation of Moonlight, a show that was off to a rocky start only to end up in that “Bermuda Romance Triangle,” in which the protagonist played by Alex O’Loughlin is a vampire detective who is falling for a journalist, came as a bit of a shock. Mostly because despite the paper-thin plot, the characters were still likeable enough to capture attention of audience.

And they have. Alex O’Loughlin, a no-name face from Australia, was voted in one of those “sexy men” polls by TV Guide, meaning that women have been paying attention and watching the show.

But then we go back to the ratings, and CBS is attempting to get the numbers back, something that cannot be managed with ratings that Moonlight provides.

This does not deter the fans to picket the fences at CBS, and petition the network to resurrect the show. Unlike New Amsterdam, a show that I have, for some reason, immensely disliked, Moonlight actually grew on me, as I endedup liking it more than I expected.

An alternative is for a second network to house the show. SciFi Channel has been petitioned to look into whether they can adopt this stray. This may sound far fetched, but not entirely impossible.

Either way, we can all agree that there are too many detectives, and not enough vampires on the small screen.

Resurrection of Moonlight

I am so disappointed in CBS’s decision to cancel Moonlight. Unfortunately, the Nielson ratings could be perceived as an inaccurate indicator of the show’s merit and worth and the “number of viewers” due to confounding variables such as time and day of the week it is shown, age range, fans taping it for later viewing, and how the ratings are evaluated and weighted i.e. externally, across the TV networks or internally, within CBS.

The show was just getting grounded and surmounted obstacles like the writer’s strike and refining its production etc.

Start up modes are full of ups and downs however, a positive outcome and sustainability of this show are worth the growing pains. There is so much potential-what a shame to allow it to go untapped and undeveloped.

For the sake of humanity and the viewers, please help resurrect Moonlight!

re: Ressurection of Moonlight

you’re soooo right. Moonlight was a decent show in its very first season. I doubt that any show, unless made in UK, could possibly be judged based on its first season, and yet this one has been. Especially when considering that writer’s strike interfered with production and marketing of Moonlight. It’s a real shame.

Another valid point is RATINGS! What are ratings anyways? These numbers that networks keep throwing about are so incredibly unreliable, and do not by any means depict the true viewership or size of audience.

Remember Arrested Development? Everyone I know is still pissed about the cancellation of this show. How is it possible that so many people are still keenly intersted and emotionally vested in viewing of it, yet the numbers do not pan out? Are the production costs truly that high? Or is the gnawing fact that traditional broadcasting has been usurped a consideration dismissed by executives?

All these questions, and very few answers…

The show’s poor ratings

The show’s poor ratings are a result of CBS’s actions; they stuck the show on Friday night! No show on Fridays gets good ratings, especially in it’s first season.

At least the finale was written to work as a series finale. It would be worse for it to be brought back just to be cancelled on a cliffhanger. And after Jerico, there’s little chance that any show brought back is going to be given much of a chance.

Fortunately, we’ve got True Blood to look forward to.

Agreed...yet

Patrick, I have to agree - on one hand, the schedule of Friday night tends to kill anything in its path (Why don’t we broadcast dancing shows on Fridays? Isn’t that what old people who don’t go out watch anyways?), but on the other hand, it seems that these shows that we find insanely fun are actually enjoyed by niche audiences rather than millions of Americans…ergo…what the hell do they expect? And I don’t expect ratings will be better for True Blood.

Whatev the reason, I know I'll miss the show

Because vampires rule. And this was kind of a sweet and romantic show. Minus the chick. I can’t stand that lady for some reason.
