Embryo from Adult Cells: Road to Mini-Me

by Irma Arkus

Nature reported that Stemagen used adult human cells to produce blastocysts. Considered the first step towards human cloning, the blastocysts can be used to produce embryonic cells. There seems to be a debate in scientific circles on validity of Stemagen’s claims, as scientists from Advanced Cell Technology, and Cellular Reprogramming Laboratory have interpreted results with mixed opinions.

This is perhaps a great advance in field of stem-cell research and cloning, but an even greater insight into the growing number of private companies that conduct genetics research. Our fears of human cloning may be exaggerated, but are certainly not without cause.
